The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics to John J. Hopfield (Princeton University, New Jersey, USA) and Geoffrey E. Hinton (University of Toronto, Canada) for fundamental discoveries and inventions that allow machine learning with artificial neural networks.
John Hopfield created an associative memory that can store and reconstruct images and other types of patterns in data. Geoffrey Hinton invented a method that can autonomously find properties in data and thus perform tasks such as identifying specific elements in images.
Physical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering students from DF acquire training in this rapidly developing and extremely important area, which is machine learning.
